The resume has to be simple formal yet a work of art that would tempt the employer to read it. It should be neatly organised, balanced, Symmetrical and well-spaced. More the white space between the characters and words and paragraphs the neater your resume would appear.

You should avoid writing long paragraphs. Short and simple sentences and paragraphs are more welcome.

There should be a uniform use of Underlining, Italics and Bold characters. There is uniformity and consistency in the use of italics, capital letters, bullets, boldface, and underlining. You should follow Absolute parallelism all formats. For example, if one degree is bold all the degrees should be bold, if a date follows a job every job should be followed by the respective dates.
As mentioned previously ‘First impression’ matters a lot to the employer given the 30 seconds he takes to consider your resume for interview. Remember that a resume is like an advertisement. It would leave more impact only if it is organised and neat. It should be exceptionally appealing and convey sincerity and dedication towards the job. A haphazard resume can result into immediate failure.

Punctuation errors, Syntax errors, grammatical mistakes or any typographical error can be unforgivable and reflect you as negligent. There also shouldn’t be factual errors.

All the basic information is expected and should be included in the resume. Your resume should have your name, address and other contact details at the top of the first page.

The jobs listed under the Experience subheading should include your designation, name of the company, location and years of work experience. Less significant and early jobs should be summarised.

The resume should be targeted towards your employer and the specific job opening you have applied for. It should clearly state your career objective, your skills and qualities that make you eligible and most suited for this job. You should build the structure of your resume around these qualities proving them in every next step.

You should try to highlight the strengths and positive qualities and hide or diminish all negative points in your resume. These negative points can be related to your previous job or a gap in your work experience. Use the previously explained techniques to cover all weak points. Use Boldface, Italics and Underlining to emphasize your achievements, qualities and skills.

Your resume should be guided towards a focus. This would help the employer to understand easily. You should avoid writing a mystery resume that has to be reader over and over again to determine your work experiences and designations. Write in simple points and short paragraphs, elaborate only as and when required. Your ‘Objective’ should be directly related to the job and the rest of your resume related to the ‘Objective’.

Using Keywords or Power words is important in order to convince the employer at every step. Support every skill, achievement, work experience and academic history with the most convincing verb that comes to your mind. Beginning the sentences with such power words is important to emphasize your credibility to the employer.
